Our team A Social Movement raised approximately $2500, which in turn will be matched to achieve $5000! That in turn will be leveraged with CIDA funds to up to 10x depending up on the project!
While compared to the scale of the problem, it may not seem like much, perhaps more importantly, our team has raised awareness about this great walk (Canada’s largest walk fighting Global Poverty) and has raised awareness about the importance of long term, multi input sustainable programs. In this ever increasingly interconnected world, I am proud that Canadians are addressing this issue.
Over 50 people walked with our team, wearing one of our bibs, but we were a part of something a lot larger as well! Across the country, more than 40000 people came together to walk in different cities across Canada, and the amounts raised are already being released.
Vancouver: approx $2M
Toronto: approx $1.5M
Edmonton: approx. $675K
Kitchener: approx: $150K
Other cities announcing soon.
Importantly, ALL funds (100%) go directly to the programs - not a cent is paid on administrative costs.
Our team could not have been put together without the support of our online community amongst whom, these individuals deserve special mentions (in no particular order):
@dariusbashar, @erin_bury, @nairapemberton, @sarahprevette, @jaygoldman, @saulcolt, @mujna, @katejongbloed, @casiestewart, @karimkanji, @taliarusso, @skanwar, @aazambhimji, @rlangdon, @clickflickca, @karmacakedotca, @jarodvhale, @reado, @idogood, @faizakanji, @stuartma, @nailaj , @photojunkie, Roxanna Kara Kassam, Raheema Hemraj, and @fnthawar
In addition, we could not have pulled this off without the support from SonyEricsson, RedWire (@RedWire), BibNumbers.com, A Daily Challenge @DoOneGood), Erika Rodrigues (Apolonia Designs), Devo Brown at Flow93.5, Altruism Challenge (@zakirh, @nadirebrahim,@imrane), and Kate Jongbloed at Unpacking Development (@katejongbloed).
I hope through this walk, everyone’s awareness of the different approaches to Global Poverty has been raised and that each of us will take the time to continue to advocate the value of long term sustainable development, empowering communities, and most importantly reaffirming the right to dignity that every individual desires.
This is Canada’s largest charity walk fighting global poverty and we just completed the 25th year! It is a testament to the impact that a small group of individuals, who started the first walk in Vancouver in 1985, can have.
This was the first year of A Social Movement joining up to the cause - I look forward seeing all of you again next year!
